Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden invites you to a delightful evening over tea and moonlight at the 2019 Mid-Autumn Moon Festival!

With a history that goes back over 4,000 years, Chinese tea culture is truly an art. Since ancient times, tea has been an important element of inspiration in Chinese poetry. Tea drinking is not just a simple act of consuming a beverage, but a spiritual enjoyment– a ritual that brings people together in appreciation and reflection. Many a poet would compose with a cup of tea upon their table, the complex fragrance and flavour stimulating the senses and imagination beneath the glow of the bright moon.

Take part in this tradition at the 2019 Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, and experience firsthand the intertwined connection between tea, art, and the moon. Taste the six types of Chinese tea, enjoy mooncakes and music, and make your own lantern! This year’s celebration will also feature a tea poetry contest and the opening of Lam Wong’s year-long artist residency at the Garden.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Tea & Art | 5:30-6:30pm
Celebrate the opening of the Chaji / 茶寂 exhibit, a six-month art exhibition showcasing the diverse genre of artwork of five curated artists together with Lam Wong, the Garden’s new Artist in Residence.

Tea Poetry Contest | 5:00–9:00pm
Let the moon inspire you as it did ancient scholars, while you savour fragrant tea in the garden. Compose your masterpiece under the moonlight for a chance to win a limited edition (93/100) Gongfu tea set designed by artist Lam Wong. The winner will be determined by a panel of judges, and announced on Tuesday, September 17.

Gongfu Tea Tasting | Every 20 minutes starting at 5:10pm
Enjoy a cup of tea served in the traditional Chinese way, and learn about the art of tea tasting from a tea artist. Bring your own cup, or purchase a special Chinese Garden teacup.

Guzheng Performance and Interactive Session | 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, and 8:00pm
Join musician Joyce Tan at the top of the hour for a live performance of guzheng, the Chinese zither. Learn how the instrument works following each 20-minute performance.

Mooncake Demo | 7:00-7:45pm, 8:00-8:45pm
Learn how to make mooncakes, the traditional Chinese pastry for this festive day.

Hanfu and Lantern Photo Stations | 5:00–9:00 pm
Get into Instagram mode with our giant moon lantern! Try on the traditional outfits of the Han Chinese people and have your photo taken with the Hanfu Club. Meet Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the Moon, on her wanders through the garden.

Lantern Making | 5:00–9:00pm
Purchase and make a festive lantern to take home!
