West End Food Fiesta

August 12, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm PDT

We acknowledge that Gordon Neighbourhood House is on the unceded, occupied, ancestral and traditional homelands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We would like to recognize the tremendous labour that has gone into nurturing and protecting these traditional lands.

EVENT SCHEDULE:

12:30-1:00PM – Doors open, Registration

We start promptly at 1PM, please arrive early to sign in and get settled.

1:00-1:20PM – Welcome & Land Acknowledgement

1:20-2:30PM – Townhall on Food Security

What challenges do you face accessing food in the West End and Downtown? What can we do as a community to create a more vibrant food system in the neighbourhood? This community dialogue invites all attendees to share, connect and collaborate to find solutions around food security.

2:45-4:15PM – Food Workshops

Attendees will divide into two groups for the following two workshops. Note these workshops occur at the same time (2:45-4:15pm), so you must choose between the Kimchi OR Wonder of Bees workshop when you register.

Workshop A: Let’s Make Kimchi!

Learn to make kimchi, a traditional fermented Korean side dish, in this Village Vancouver-West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop, and take home a jar of your own creation!  We’ll have a community seed library present – pick up, swap or donate free seeds for your garden.

OR

Workshop B: The Wonder of Bees

Discover the wonder of bees and pollinators in this Village Vancouver-West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop with chief beekeeper Julia Common. You’ll learn what Hives for Humanity is doing in our city with bees and people, and taste some neighbourhood honey.  You can also pick up, swap or donate free seeds (including pollinator-friendly seeds) for your garden.

4:30PM – 6:00PM – Summer Herbs & Drinks Mixer

Come unwind with a refreshing drink for the last event of the day! Learn how to grow herbs to mix your own summer drinks. Grab a glass, mix some drinks and relax with your fellow Food Fiesta attendees. This event is in partnership with Young Ideas and supported by Neighbourhood Small Grants.
